Same type of person and same toxic Relationship pattern

If you keep ending up with the same kind of person or the same painful dynamic, it usually isn’t bad luck or a coincidence. Your may. not be aware that your subconscious mind is running an attachment “template” that was formed early in life, and it quietly steers who feels familiar. In this article we discuss how this template works and how you can change it to attract and find a healthy partner to be with.

So you keep attracting the same type of person? This is because your subconscious mind matches new partners to a familiar emotional template that was originally set in childhood. What feels like chemistry may often be recognition — your nervous system reading “familiar” as “right.” This leads to repeating relationship patterns that are not necessarily good for you but just familiar. This “subconscious phenomenon” is not a character flaw, but instead a programmed pattern that can be changed.

It’s a Pattern, Not a Coincidence

In my practice as both a Medical Doctor and a certified hypnotherapist, I hear the same quiet realization all the time: “Why do I keep falling for the same kind of person” Different name, different city, sometimes a completely different background, and yet the relationship arrives at the exact same place. Either it be they are not available, avoidant, and even a cheater.

When a pattern repeats like this, even if just twice, it isn’t random. Random would look messy and varied. A repeating pattern points to a system running underneath your awareness — making the conscious choices unavailable to you.

That’s the first thing I want you to hear: you are not choosing badly on purpose, and you are not “broken.” You’re responding to a template that started before you likely even had thoughts about it. Being able to understand that template is the beginning of changing it, and it’s the reason many people finally address their toxic relationship patterns at the root rather than white-knuckling their way through another breakup or give up even trying.

So, what is a Subconscious Template you may be asking

Think of the mind like a computer. The screen of a computer represents the conscious mind — there are words or logic, thoughts and thinking, your to do list resides here. And then we have the Hard drive of a computer, this is where memory is stored and also programs for softwares your computer runs on are located. The hard drive is like the subconscious of your mind and accounts to roughly 90% of your mind. This is were the programing or the “relationship template” is held.

That template was written a long time ago. According to attachment theory — one of the most well-studied frameworks in developmental psychology — the bonds we form with our earliest caregivers shape what we come to expect from love, closeness, and safety (American Psychological Association). If closeness in childhood came bundled with anxiety, unpredictability, or having to earn affection, your nervous system files that as the blueprint for how to get what you need as an adult.

What that means is your subconscious isn’t trying to make you happy, It’s trying to keep you safe, and safe is also what may feel familiar (it is what you know and you know no other way, even if logically it isn’t safe). So when you meet someone who unconsciously matches the old blueprint, you feel a jolt of recognition — and you could be calling that chemistry. Often, that early template traces back to unresolved experiences that hypnotherapy for childhood trauma is specifically designed to reach.

Why “Losing Yourself” Happens

Many clients also have told me that it isn’t just who they pick — it’s who they also become once they’re in it. “Why do I keep losing myself in relationships?” they may ask. This is the same relationship template I am referring to but showing up in reverse and usually takes more time to become aware of.

Losing yourself is the template in action. If your subconscious learned that connection requires shrinking, over-adapting, or managing the other person’s moods, then falling in love flips a switch: you begin editing yourself to hold the bond together. It doesn’t feel like a decision. It feels like love. But over months, the accommodation adds up, and one day you look up and can’t quite find the person you were before the relationship began.

This is not a form of weakness but instead is a slow mechanism of a protective strategy that once kept you connected and safe when you were young and with others. The main problem is that this type of programming is running long after it stopped serving you which could be the reason you find yourself reading this now looking for answers.

If reading this feels uncomfortably familiar, you don’t have to untangle it alone, know there is hope and help and even alternatives that work fast to create change. Book a consultation to explore what your pattern is protecting.

The Part of You That Picks (Parts Work)

One of the most freeing ways I help clients understand this pattern is through parts work hypnotherapy, which recognizes that we all have different internal “parts” with different jobs.

There’s a part of you that genuinely longs for a healthy, mutual connection. And there’s another, older part — a protector — that scans for what’s familiar and steers you toward it, because familiar is what it knows how to survive. When those two parts disagree, the protector usually wins, because it operates faster and beneath your awareness.

That’s the internal tug-of-war behind “the reason I repeat the same relationship patterns.” You’re not fighting a lack of willpower. You’re witnessing two parts of yourself with two very different definitions of safety. Depth work lets them meet, so the protector can finally update what it believes love is supposed to feel like.

How the Pattern Actually Changes

Here’s the encouraging part. Because the pattern is stored subconsciously, it can also be revised there. When we work directly with the template — rather than just discussing it like most talk therapy does — the “familiar” starts to shift quickly. A calm, available partner stops feeling boring, and a chaotic one stops feeling like fireworks.

That’s the work I do in relationship healing hypnotherapy: updating the blueprint at the level where it was written, so your choices change from the inside out. Clients throughout Broward County and South Florida — including those who prefer relationship hypnotherapy near Hollywood, FL — come to me precisely because they’ve understood the pattern for years and are ready to actually change it.

Is attracting the same type of person really subconscious, or am I just making bad choices?

We never want to make a bad decision but in the moment we don’t realize it is a bad decision therefore that tells me it is subconscious. In the moment we make a decision it may be based on how you are feeling not knowing that it could or could not be bad. This would then tell me it is truly subconscious – especially if you find yourself repeating the same type of “bad decisions”. In such situations we loss trust with what we feel and even get confused on what to do. In such scenarios it is best to find someone reliable, knowledgable that you can trust to guide you through the situation and help you come to the right decision.

Is attracting the same type of person really subconscious, or am I just making bad choices?

It’s largely subconscious. Your mind matches new partners to an emotional template formed in early relationships, so someone who fits that blueprint feels instantly “right.” usually there is a gut feeling about this initially put there may be a part of you that still goes after them – usually it is hard to put your finger on why you want to be with this person. The subconscious is where your emotions and behaviors are stored and we usually make decisions based on how we feel ignoring the gut feeling or logic.

Can hypnotherapy actually change who I’m attracted to?

It can make you aware as to why you are attracted to who you are attracted to and even help you decide if that person is truly good for you. Hypnotherapy can help you become aware of toxic patterns and rid them so you attract partners that are more healthier for you.

I already understand my pattern. Why do I keep repeating it anyway?

Because insight lives in the conscious mind, while the pattern lives in the subconscious. Knowing why you do something doesn’t automatically rewrite the template driving it. Lasting change happens when you work at the subconscious level where the pattern was originally stored, not just intellectually.
