Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy for IBS
Schedule Phone ConsultationGut-directed hypnotherapy is a structured, evidence-based use of clinical hypnosis for IBS — recommended in gastroenterology guidelines. It calms an over-sensitive gut-brain connection and eases pain, urgency, and bloating. In my Fort Lauderdale practice I offer it alongside your medical care, never as a replacement for it.
If you have IBS, you already know it can run your day more than you’d like — the unpredictable pain, the bloating, the planning of every outing around a bathroom. As both a Medical Doctor and a certified hypnotherapist, I offer hypnotherapy for IBS to people in Fort Lauderdale whose gut has stayed loud long after the tests came back “normal.” IBS is one of several conditions hypnotherapy can support alongside your medical care. If that sounds like what you’ve been looking for, you can book a free consultation whenever you’re ready.
The Gut-Brain Connection in Plain Language
Your gut has its own brain. The lining of your digestive tract holds a web of over 500 million nerve cells — the enteric nervous system — so extensive that researchers call it the “second brain.” It’s in constant, two-way conversation with the brain in your head over a highway of nerves.
That’s why stress shows up as gut symptoms, and gut symptoms feed anxiety right back. According to the National Institutes of Health, this gut-brain axis directly links the emotional centers of the brain with the movement and sensitivity of your intestines. In plain terms: what your mind carries, your gut often holds.
In my experience, this is the missing piece for many IBS patients. Emotions we never fully processed don’t simply vanish — the body stores them, and for many people the gut is where that tension lands. When the second brain stays on high alert, digestion becomes hypersensitive: normal sensations get amplified into pain, and normal digestion turns urgent.
What Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Is
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specific clinical method — not a generic relaxation session. It combines three things: education about how your digestive system works, guiding you into a focused, deeply relaxed hypnotic state, and personalized imagery aimed at normalizing how your gut and brain communicate. Over time, this quiets an over-sensitive gut and eases the pain signals it sends.
It’s important to say clearly: this is complementary to your medical care, and never a substitute for it. And because “all hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” you stay fully aware and in control the entire time — I’m simply guiding you to reach your own nervous system. You can read more about my approach on my hypnotherapy services page.
Why It Appeaes in Clinical Guidelines
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is well-studied enough that leading gastroenterology guidelines recommend it. The American College of Gastroenterology’s IBS guideline recommends gut-directed behavioral therapies — including hypnosis — for global IBS symptoms, noting they have some of the strongest evidence for both short- and long-term relief. In published trials, a majority of people with IBS see meaningful improvement, commonly in the 50–75% range, with benefits often holding for years.
As a physician, I value that this is real, measurable medicine rather than wishful thinking. It’s one of the few gut-brain approaches with that level of clinical backing — which is exactly why I trained in it and offer it in my practice.
What a Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Session Involves
Your first appointment begins with a foundational understanding of how emotions, symptoms, and your stressors are creating more chaos in your gut then you may realize. We map what those emotions, symptoms or stresoors are and then relate it to your gut. After this introduction portions we then do a gentle induction (guided relaxation), then gut-directed imagery and suggestion aimed straight at the brain-gut connection, and parts work — a compassionate dialogue with the part of you that has been holding tension in your body.
Many clients feel their stomach physically soften during the session. Appointments are available virtually or in person in Fort Lauderdale, and I’ll usually teach you a simple self-hypnosis technique to calm your gut at home when a flare starts. You can see a full walk-through on my session experience page.
What to Expect Over a Course of Sessions
Gut-directed hypnotherapy works best as a structured course rather than a one-off. Many people notice calmer digestion within the first few sessions, while deeper, lasting change usually builds over roughly six to twelve weekly sessions — the kind of arc reflected in the research. Improvement often continues even after the course ends.
This works best as part of your wider care. Please keep your gastroenterologist and any prescribed treatment, and talk with your physician about adding hypnotherapy — especially if your symptoms are new, changing, or have never been medically evaluated. Once IBS is confirmed, hypnotherapy is a strong next layer of care that treats the gut-brain driver behind your symptoms.

Most Commonly Asked for Questions for IBS & Gut Health
Is gut-directed hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. It is a non-invasive, drug-free approach with an excellent safety profile and no side effects for most healthy adults. You remain fully aware and in control throughout and cannot be made to act against your values. As a Medical Doctor, Dr. Balkanski confirms your symptoms have been properly evaluated before beginning.
Do I need an IBS Diagnosis before we start?
Ideally, yes. Because IBS is diagnosed by ruling out other conditions, it is safest to have your symptoms evaluated by a physician first. The scope of practice that Dr. Ann Marie practices is strictly Hypnotherapy and therefore would be unable to form a diagnosis. Check with your designated Primary Care Doctor for this before doing hypnotherapy for IBS or Gut Related issues.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the issue and your goals. Some athletes notice change after just one or two sessions; others benefit from a short series (3–6 sessions) to reinforce new patterns and strengthen confidence. Together, we’ll tailor a plan that fits your needs.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Some clients notice calmer nights within the first one to three sessions, while long-standing insomnia tied to stress or trauma may take longer. During your free consultation I’ll give you a realistic, individualized estimate rather than a one-size-fits-all package — your sleep history and goals shape the plan.
Will I lose control or be “out of it” during hypnosis?
Not at all. You remain fully aware and in control. Hypnosis is a relaxed but focused state — similar to the “zone” athletes already experience when fully immersed in performance. You’ll hear everything and remember what happens.
Can gut-directed hypnotherapy be done online?
Yes. Secure virtual sessions work very well for IBS alongside in-person appointments in Fort Lauderdale, because the work is guided and internal. You only need a quiet, comfortable space where you can relax undisturbed for the length of the session, whether at home or elsewhere.
